| Summary: King "Dave" falls into
"lust at first sight" when he stumbles upon a gorgeous mystery
woman bathing. He's dreaming of romantic nights in the palace, so
through charming, yet aggressive love letters, Dave entices
"Bath" to visit him. All goes well, until Bath drops a
bomb on "Dearest Dave." (Based on II Samuel 11) |
Setting: David and Bathsheba are seated at opposite ends of the stage,
writing as they speak.
David
Dear mystery woman, I saw you washing yourself on
the rooftop last night. They tell me your name is Sheba, but since you
were bathing, I prefer to call you BATHsheba. Respectfully, King David.
| Sheba
Dear King David, I saw you watching me last night
as I took my bath. You are a very naughty boy. Respectfully, Bathsheba.
| David
Dear Bathsheba, I may be naughty, but I am also
King, therefore, I may do whatever I wish. Aggressively, King David.
| Sheba
Dear King David, I just love an aggressive man!
Admiringly, Bathsheba.
| David
Dear Bathsheba, if we’re going to be friends,
and I know we will be, let’s not be so formal. Please, call me
Dave. Your friend, Dave.
| Sheba
Dear Dave, as long as we’re getting familiar
with one another, why don’t you call me "Bath." Only you and
I will know why. Wink, wink. Lovingly, Bath.
| David
Dear Bath, how would you like to come visit the
Royal Palace? With great anticipation, Dave.
| Sheba
My Dearest Dave, how could you ask me such a
thing? I am a married woman. Sincerely, Bath.
| David
My Dearest Bath, I ask because I am the king.
Besides, isn’t your husband on the battlefield? Love, Dave.
| Sheba
Dear Dave, yes, he is. Love, Bath.
| David
Dear Bath, then what’s the problem? Your
husband will never know. Now, when would you like to come to the palace?
Again, with great anticipation, Dave.
| Sheba
Dear Dave, I’m not so sure about this.
Confused, Bath.
| David
Dear Bath, what’s so confusing? You’re here,
you’re husband isn’t, and I am king. Please come soon. Waiting
impatiently, Dave.
| Sheba
Dear Dave, how can I resist? I suppose one
peek at the palace wouldn’t hurt. See you at midnight. Love, Bath.
| David
Dearest Bath, I had a wonderful time here at the
palace last night. I hope you can come back soon. Lovingly, Dave.
| Sheba
Dearest Dave, I also had a wonderful time at the
palace. I would love to come back. Lovingly, Bath.
| David
My dearest Bath…..
| Sheba
My dearest Dave…..
| Both |
...I miss you ever so much!
| David
Dear Bath, please visit with me again. I can’t
stop thinking about you. All my love, Dave.
| Sheba
Dave, I want to see you again, but don’t see
how I possibly can. What if word gets back to my husband? I’m afraid,
Bath.
| David
Don’t worry my love. My people are very loyal—their
lips will be sealed. Besides, anyone who talks will be immediately put
to death! Now, stop worrying and come to me. Love, Dave.
| Sheba
Dave, l’m glad I came back to the palace last
night. I never knew there was such a wide variety of grapes. Do you
think you could send over some more of those red, seedless ones? I think
they’d be a big hit with my staff. Thanks, Bath.
| David
No problem, Bath. Whatever you want. Dave.
| Sheba
Dear Dave, I don’t think I can see you anymore.
Bath.
| David
Bath, didn’t you like the grapes I sent you?
| Sheba
It’s not that. I just know people are going to
find out about us Dave. We’ve got to stop.
| David
I’ve already told you, no one will know. Stop
worrying and let me handle everything. Besides, what could wrong, I am
King!
| Sheba
Dear Dave, I’m pregnant.
| David
(puts letter down, looks at audience) Uh-oh!
