The Prodigal

Setting: A living room.

(Matt is sitting on the couch reading a newspaper when a knock is heard at the door. Matt gets up and opens the door to find his sister, who he hasn’t seen in awhile standing in his doorway.)

Matt: Carol?

Carol: Surprise!

Matt: (gives her a hug) How long has it been, three years?

Carol: Something like that, yeah. Can I come in?

Matt: Of course! Have a seat.

(Carol and Matt both sit)

Matt: So, how are you? How have you been? What are doing here?

Carol: (answering his questions one at a time) I’m gonna be fine. Not so good. And I was in the neighborhood.

Matt: Sorry, it’s just that I haven’t seen my little sister in such a long time. I can’t believe you’re sitting right here in my living room. It’s so great to see you!

Carol: I’m glad to hear you say that. I wasn’t so sure how you’d feel about seeing me again after our last conversation. Do you remember?

Matt: (sadly) Yeah, I remember. I’m so sorry about that Carol. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about it, and wish I could take back the things I said. I know how much I must have hurt you.

Carol: You were only trying to protect me….keep me from making the same mistakes, again!

Matt: I tried to call you the next day but your phone was disconnected. I talked to the land lord but he said you and Larry had already moved out and you hadn’t left a forwarding address. I had no way to reach you.

Carol: I know. It was stupid Matt...I was so stupid…

Matt: No, that’s not what I’m saying. I was just worried about you. I wanted to apologize. I wanted you to know I was here for you, whatever you needed. Instead…

Carol: It wasn’t your fault. You were only trying to help me. I know that now. (pause) I wish I would have listened.

Matt: How is Larry?

Carol: I don’t know. He left me 4 months after we moved out.

Matt: I’m so sorry Carol.

Carol: Not as sorry as I was when I went to the bank and realized he’d emptied out our savings account.

(Matt looks away and there is a long pause)

Carol: It’s okay, you can say it: "I told you so."
