Excerpt: This is just a sample. Whole portions of the sections have been excluded, but this should be enough to give a general feeling of the overall skit. Sharon: You really do like this painting don’t you? Ellen: Yeah. There’s just something about it… Sharon: Maybe you should buy it. How much is it? Ellen: I don’t know. I haven’t looked at the price yet. Sharon: (checking the price tag) This is weird. It says that the price has already been paid and that it’s free to anyone who will accept it. Ellen: What does that mean? What kind of art gallery gives away a free painting? Sharon: I don’t know. (A sales clerk enters, seeing the women admire the painting) Clerk: I see you’ve found our masterpiece. Ellen: Yes, it’s quite a production. I love it, but I’m curious about the price. Sharon: Yeah, the tag says it’s free. Clerk: That’s correct. It’s already been paid for, so you can have it if you want it. Ellen: But this painting is so valuable. What’s the catch? Clerk: No catch. The price has already been paid, that’s all. Ellen: Well, this is ridiculous. I’ve never heard of such a thing. I’m willing to pay something for it. Clerk: (confused) But you don’t have to pay anything for it. It’s free. Ellen: (Not paying attention to the clerk—she begins to dig in her purse. Taking out some money, she offers it to the clerk) All I have is $50. Would you take that for the painting? Clerk: Miss, the painting is free. It’s already been paid for. Ellen: I know, but would you take $50 for it? (then getting an idea) Oh, I could give you the $50 now, and my bank is right around the corner. I could come back in a few minutes with another $100. Would you take that? Clerk: I don’t think you’re understanding me. (She begins to talk very slowly and more loudly, as if speaking to someone who doesn’t understand English) The painting… has already… been paid for. It… is FREE. All you…need to do….is take it home….if….you want… it. Ellen: Okay, $200. |
