Setting: Two women on opposite ends of the room. One woman sits in a comfy chair next to an end table with a telephone. The other sits in an office chair at her desk. Sitting on the desk should be a telephone, perhaps with a headset, and a laptop or computer of some kind with a keyboard.

(Doris picks up telephone and dials)

Jen: (answers telephone) Thank you for calling "Find a Friend." This is Jen. How may I help you?

Doris: Hi, my name is Doris and I'm looking for some friends.

Jen: Are you new to the area Doris?

Doris: No, I've lived here about 11 years.

Jen: You've lived in the area for 11 years and you don't have any friends?

Doris: (defensive) Yeah, is that a problem?

Jen: Obviously so, if you're calling "Find a Friend."

Doris: (backing down) Oh, right. Look, it's not my fault.I live in an unfriendly neighborhood and the people at my church don't reach out.

Jen: It's okay Doris, you've come to the right place. I'm sure we can match you up with a great friend.

Doris: I hope so. I've tried just about everything to make a friend but nothing seems to work. You're my last hope!

Jen: Why don't you tell me what methods you've tried in the past.

Doris: Okay. Well, one Sunday at church I smiled at this lady as I was heading out the door.

Jen: (begins typing as Doris speaks, then waits for more) Did you stop and talk to her?

Doris: Are you kidding? No, I didn't stop to talk! I had to hurry home to get lunch on the table for my kids, you know? They're starving by the time church is over. (laughs) You think I've got time to chit-chat after church? (laughs again)

Jen: So, you smiled at the woman...

Doris: Yeah.

Jen: And?

Doris: And she smiled back. I thought she was a nice lady at first but I've changed my mind about her since she never called or anything.

Jen: But you didn't speak to her at all?

Doris: No, I've never spoken to her.

Jen: Then why would you expect her to call you?

Doris: (impatient) I told you, because I smiled at her.

Jen: I see. Does this woman have your phone number?

Doris: I don't know but I'm listed in the phone book.

Jen: Does she even know your name?

Doris: How should I know?

Jen: Doris, how is this woman supposed to call you if you've never even spoken to her and she doesn't know your name or your phone number?

Doris: Because I...

Jen: ..'smiled at her. Right.

Doris: Hey, if she wants to be my friend she's got to make a little effort too, you know what I mean?

Jen:     (not sure what to make of Doris) Gotcha.  Okay, what else have you done to make friends?

Doris:  One Sunday I did have to wait around a bit after church because my husband had a quick meeting.  I stood by the door and waited for someone to talk to me on the way out, but nobody did. Like I said, the women don't seem to reach out.

Jen:     Did you try making conversation with any of them?

Doris:  No.

Jen:     Did you call any of them after you got home and invite them out for lunch during the week?

Doris:  Why would I do that?  I didn't even know half of those people!  I'm not gonna call up some woman I don't even know! Plus, it's not like I have their phone numbers tattooed on my forehead!
