Themes: Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me"; Jesus and children; child-like behaviors; kids and the kingdom
Categories: Bible Characters, Children, Topical
Summary:

A young boy is very excited at the thought of meeting Jesus, but on the journey there, he can't help but pummel his mother with comments such as, "Are we there yet?"; "I'm hungry"; "I'm thirsty"; "How much farther?" and "I have to go to the bathroom."  The very patient mother can only take so much, and is relieved when they finally reach their destination.  However, when it looks like one of Jesus' disciples is going to prevent the boy from talking to Jesus, both mother and son are disappointed.  That is, until Jesus tells the disciple to "Let the little children come unto me."  The boy is happy to finally be able to talk to Jesus, and even happier to report to his mother that all grown-ups should be like little children because "theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Setting: A mother and her son on their way to meet Jesus

As the scene opens, Jacob enters, very excited. Throughout the skit, he talks very fast and is “hyper”

Jacob:

Mom, come on, I’m ready to go!

Mom:

(off stage) I’m coming

Jacob:

(jumping up and down) Hurry! We’re gonna be late!

Mom:

(enters) Jacob, please settle down.  We don’t have to be in such a rush.  Jesus will be there all day.

Jacob:

I don’t want to miss him.  Come on, I’ll race ya!

Jacob “rushes” ahead and disappears from the stage

Mom:

Jacob, wait up!

Mom “runs” after him and also disappears from the stage—after a moment, they both reappear, continue to move as if they are walking

Jacob:

Are we there yet?

Mom:

No.

Jacob:

How much farther?

Mom:

About 5 miles.

Jacob:

How come we have to walk?

Mom:

Because your father needed the horse to go to work today.

Jacob:

Oh.  (pause, then very excited again)  I can’t wait to meet Jesus.  He’s so awesome! Don’t you think he’s awesome, Mom?

Mom:

Yes, he’s very awesome.

Jacob:

Did you know He can walk on water?

Mom:

Yes, I did.

Jacob:

That would be so cool.  Wouldn’t that be cool, Mom?

Mom:

Yes, it would be very cool.

Jacob:

He can turn water into wine too.

Mom:

Yes, I heard about that.

Jacob:

Do you think he could walk on wine too?

Mom:

I don’t know.  Probably.

Jacob:

Mom?

Mom:

What?

Jacob:

What if the line is too long once we get there?

Mom:

Then we’ll wait.

Jacob:

Okay. (pause) Mom?

Mom:

Yes, Jacob?

Jacob:

What if we miss him?

Mom:

We won’t.

Jacob:

Mom?

Mom:

(getting annoyed) What?

Jacob:

What if he’s too busy to talk to me?

Mom:

Jesus is never too busy to talk to kids.

Jacob:

(long pause) But what if he gets sick and has to leave?

Mom:

(getting more annoyed) Then, he’ll heal himself and come back!  (calming down) Look Jacob, everything will be fine.  I promise.  Just calm down and enjoy the walk, okay?

Jacob:

Okay.  (pause) Are we there yet?
