Mommy Training Camp-Drama Skit

Themes: Moms; Mother's Day; being a mother is hard work; appreciating what mom's do; being a mom is a full-time job
Categories: Women's Ministry, Mother's Day
Summary:

Jack is tired of hearing his wife complain about how tired she is, how busy she is keeping up with the kids and how hard she works as a mom, so he decides to enlist in a mommy training camp to prove that her complaints "are all in her head." After all, he thinks, "How hard can it be?"  His confidence begins to waver when Nora, the woman in charge, brings out a HUGE training manual with the list of all his duties.  The title of "mother" doesn't seem so easy after Jack hears what his training will require, which includes things like: making home-cooked meals only (no fast food), making lists and grocery shopping, cleaning, doing laundry, scheduling appointments, sending out birthday cards to friends and family (no e-mail, since cards are more personal), becoming a "room mother," dieting, plucking his eyebrows, shaving his legs...and the list goes on and on.  By the end of the skit, Jack isn't so convinced being a mom is such an easy task and decides to not only re-think his enrollment in the training camp, but he feels he owes his wife a big apology, and a lot more help around the house!

SettingAn office.  Two-three women are sitting at a table on the side of the stage.  They each have a pamphlet of some kind in front of them and are studying.  One or more of the women may appear to be pregnant.  Nora, the woman in charge, sits at a desk center stage.  In front of the desk are 2 chairs.

As the skit opens, Nora rummages through a few files on her desk then stands up.

Nora:

(speaks to the ladies at the table) Ladies, I'll be right back.  Keep studying. (she exits)

From the other side of the stage, Jack walks in and takes a seat in one of the empty chairs in front of Nora's desk.  He appears very self-assured and confident. The ladies at the table watch Jack as he comes in, and begin to point and giggle, then whisper to each other.

Jack:

(paying the ladies no mind, he smiles and waves at them)  Good afternoon, ladies.  How are you doing today?

They each smile and nod their heads, saying "fine" etc.

Woman 1:

The woman in charge will be back in a minute.  Are you here for the...

Jack:

The training camp?  You bet!

Woman 2:

(smiling wide) Are you sure you can handle it?

Jack:

I can handle anything.  That's why I'm here.

Woman 3:

Here she comes now.   I'm sure she'll be glad to help you.

The 3 women laugh and whisper again, as Nora enters.

Nora:

Hello, I'm Nora.  (a bit confused) Can I help you?

Jack:

(stands up, stretches out his hand to shake hers) I sure hope so.  I'm Jack. I'm here for the training camp.

Nora:

(shakes his hand but reacts as if she didn't hear correctly, she shakes her head and laughs a little) I'm sorry, I thought you said you were here for the training camp.

Jack:

I did.  I am.

Nora:

(reacts as if she still didn't hear correctly) You are aware this is a camp for women, right?

Jack:

Right.  But I figure if they can do it, so can I.

Nora:

But this is a training camp for mothers and future mothers(she emphasizes the word "mothers.")

Jack:

I know.

Nora:

But you're a...(hesitates, looking him up and down) well.. you're a man.

The 3 women at the table laugh out loud.

Jack:

(smiles) Yes, I have noticed that.  (winks at Nora)

Nora:

(still very confused) I don't understand.

Jack:

Look, I realize this might be a little unusual but I really would like to be a part of this training camp.

Nora:

(realization hits) Am I on Candid Camera?  Am I being Punked(turns to the women at the table) You did this, right?  A man going to motherhood training camp...who ever hear of such a thing!! (she laughs hysterically)  You got me good this time, ladies! You got me good!  (sits down at her desk as she continues to laugh at herself)

Jack:

I don't know anything about a camera or being Punked.  I'm here because my wife is always telling me how busy she is and how hard she works at being a mom, and how tired she is all the time....But just between you and me (he leans in a little closer to Nora) I think it's all in her head.  I mean, how hard can it be, right?

Nora:

(suddenly Nora isn't smiling anymore, and almost appears to be angry) Have a seat.

As Jack sits, he gets glaring looks from the women at the table

Jack:

So, what do I have to do?  Watch soap operas all day? Take the kids to school and pick them up?  (very confident) Piece of cake!  I'll have time to squeeze in a couple rounds of golf and maybe catch a few basketball games on the tube.

Nora:

(knowingly sarcastic) Sure, piece of cake!

Jack:

That's what I thought.  (leans back in his chair, feeling very self-assured) I'll show her how easy it is!

Nora pulls out a huge binder full of papers and slams it down on the desk

Jack:

What's that?

Nora:

That's your list of duties.

Jack:

Um, (not so confident now) what?

Nora:

This is a 6-week training camp, so this is the list of duties for you to perform while you're here.

The women at the table look at him and laugh

Jack:

That seems like a lot.

Nora:

Yes, it does, doesn't it?  So we better get started.  (she opens the binder) First of all, while you're here, you will be assigned a house and a car.  You will be responsible for decorating the house, planting and caring for flowers outside, and keeping the yard and house presentable at all times.

Jack:

But I don't know anything about decorating.

Nora:

That's why you're here, Jack-to learn.  So, you will be assigned 3 children.

Jack:

(mortified) Three?
