As the skit opens, Kate (a little girl) plays silently with her doll.  After a moment, the mom enters and upon seeing her daughter playing with her doll, stands off to the side of the stage, watching. Kate does not notice her mother.

Kate:            (pretending to feed and talk to her doll) Please eat your vegetables Susie Lou.  I know they don't taste very good but they will make your bones strong and your hair shiny, and your nails will grow long and pretty just like Mommy's.

(leans over as if listening to her doll speak) You want to eat your dessert?  (shakes her finger at her playfully)  Susie Lou, you know we don't eat dessert until after we finish our veggies.  Come on now, just two big bites and then you can have cake.  Do it for Mommy.  (using a spoon, she feeds the doll two bites)

That's my big girl! (she smiles and hugs her doll) I love you to pieces!

Mom:   (she smiles as she moves closer to Kate) How's it going in here, Katie?

Kate:    Fine. We just finished lunch.

Mom:   What happened here? (pointing to Susie Lou's arm)

Kate:    Susie Lou fell and got an owie so I put a band-aid on it.  I kissed it and made it all better.  Just like you do.

Mom:   I'm glad Susie Lou is feeling better.

Kate:            Mommy?

Mom:   What?

Kate:    Can we go to the park today?

Mom:   I think we could probably do that, yes.

Kate:            (excited) Could we bring peanut butter sandwiches?

Mom:   Yes.

Kate:    Will you cut the crusts off?

Mom:            Ummm.(thinking

Kate:            Please?

Mom:   Okay, this one time.

Kate:    Will you make a smiley face with the honey?

Mom:   Of course!

Kate:    Mom?

Mom:   Yes?

Kate:    You're the best mom in the whole world!  When I grow up I want to be just like you!

Mom:   That's so sweet.  Thank you.

Kate:    (giving her mom a hug) I love you, Mommy.

Mom:   I love you too.

Stage lights dim, Kate as a little girl exits. Mom sits on the couch, picks up a book and reads silently. Stage lights come back up.

Kate enters in her pajamas, this time as a girl of 8 or 9.  She is crying and looks upset.

Kate:    Mom?

Mom:   (immediately concerned) Katie, what's wrong?

Kate:    I had a bad dream.

Mom:   (putting the book down, she holds out her arms) Come here.

Kate sits by her mother and snuggles up next to her. The mom strokes Kate's hair as she speaks

Mom:   You want to talk about it?

Kate:    It was horrible!  I was in this forest and a man was chasing me.  I was running as fast as I could but the man kept calling my name telling me he was going to kill me!

Mom:   That's a terrible dream.

Kate:    I was so scared!  It seemed so real!

Mom:     Dreams are like that sometimes.

Kate:    I tried to go back to sleep but every time I closed my eyes I kept seeing that man's face.

Mom:   Dreams can be very powerful.  The good news is it was only dream and you're completely safe.

Kate:    I'm still shaking.

Mom:   I know. I can feel it.  Tell you what, you can sit here with me as long as you want to until you calm down.  We'll tell funny stories to get your mind off that bad dream.  You want to go first?

Kate:    No, you.  Tell me again about how you and Daddy met.

Mom:   You mean the time when he flung chocolate pudding in my hair?

Kate:    Yeah, that's a good one.

Mom:   Okay.

Kate:    Mom?

Mom:   Yes?

Kate:    Thanks.  You always know how to make me feel better.

Mom:    Anytime.

Kate:    I love you.

Mom:   I love you too.

Stage lights dim.  The mom puts on a coat and grabs her keys and purse.  Stage lights come back up.

Mom:   Kate, what are you doing?  Come on, we're going to be late!

Kate as a teenage girl enters dressed in a .wild. fashion, dressed in all black, wild hair etc. The more dark and crazy she looks, the better.

Kate:            (sarcastic) Don't bust a gut, Mom.  I'm ready.

Mom:            (horrified at her daughter's appearance) What are you wearing?

Kate:            Clothes.

Mom:   Where did you get those?

Kate:    At the mall.

Mom:   When?

Kate:    Last week when Lisa and I went shopping.  What's the big deal?

Mom:   The big deal is you look like something out of a horror movie!

Kate:    I do not!  Besides, this is the style, Mom.  All the kids are wearing it.

Mom:   Well, you're not.  I am not going out with you looking like that.  Go and change into something else.

Kate:    I thought you said we were going to be late.

Mom:   Then we'll be late.  Go change.

Kate:    I don't want to. I like these clothes.

Mom:   Well, I don't.

Kate:    You can't tell me what to do.  I'm almost 16.  I'm not a baby anymore, Mom.

Mom:   Then stop acting like one.

Kate:    Why are you always telling me what to do?  Why can't you let me live my own life?

Mom:   When you start making better choices, I'll quit telling you what to do.

Kate:    Just because I don't do everything like you do doesn't mean I make bad choices.

Mom:   What about Kenny Johnson?

Kate:    I can't believe you brought that up.

Mom:   You're the one who said you didn't make bad choices.

Kate:    How was I supposed to know he was going behind my back to date other girls?

Mom:   I tried to tell you but you wouldn't listen.

Kate:    You're not always right, Mom.

Mom:   No, but I do always have your best interest at heart.  Which is why you need to go change, so we can leave.

Kate:    I'm not changing.

Mom:   Then you're not going.

Kate:    Fine!  I didn't want to go anyway!

Mom:   Why do you have to be so stubborn?

Kate:    Why do you have to be so controlling?

Mom:   I'm controlling to protect you.

Kate:    From what?

Mom:   At this age?  From yourself.

Kate:    You don't understand anything about me.  You have no idea what I'm going through!

Mom:   Yes, I do.  I was a teenage girl once myself.  I know exactly what you're going through.

Kate:    I'm not like you.

Mom:   You're more like me than you realize.

Kate:    No I'm not.  I don't ever want to be like you.  Just leave me alone! Forever! (Kate storms off stage as she exits)
